For Dutch stichtingen with employees: why Moral Fabric recommends a liability insurance for businesses (AVB), and what the policy should include.
Moral Fabric recommendation
An AVB covers claims when the stichting or its employees cause injury or damage to others, for example a visitor who trips at an event or equipment that breaks at a rented venue. It also covers the employer's liability under article 7:658 BW when an employee gets injured at work. An AVB is not legally required, but a single claim can exceed the reserves of a small stichting. Landlords and venues also often ask for proof of an AVB before signing a contract.
What to check in the policy
When choosing a policy, the employer checks that it includes employer's liability (werkgeversaansprakelijkheid) and the cover for work-related traffic accidents, which is required by case law. A common coverage level is €2.5 million per claim.
