Donations on your website: how to connect your Donate button to Moneybird

With the right payment provider, donations from your website land in your bank account and appear in Moneybird automatically. This page explains the recommended setup and what still needs a manual step.

How it works

The flow runs in four steps once set up:
  1. A donor clicks the donate button on the website.
  2. Mollie handles the payment (iDEAL, SEPA Direct Debit, or credit card).
  3. Mollie pays out to the organization's IBAN on a set schedule.
  4. Moneybird registers each donation automatically via the native Mollie integration.
For recurring donations, the donor authorizes a SEPA mandate once. Every subsequent charge runs without any action from the donor or the organization.

Which payment provider to use

We recommend Mollie . It is a Dutch payment provider (regulated by De Nederlandsche Bank under PSD2), supports iDEAL and SEPA recurring mandates natively, and connects to Moneybird without any middleware.
Other providers come with trade-offs:
  • MultiSafepay: also Dutch, but the Moneybird connection only works via a third-party tool not designed for nonprofit use.
  • Stripe: reliable, but a US company and requires an extra automation layer (Zapier or Make) to reach Moneybird.
  • PayPal: no clean SEPA recurring support and no Moneybird integration.
Mollie is free to open; costs are per transaction (currently €0.32 per iDEAL transaction, no monthly fee — see Mollie pricing for current rates).

Setting it up

Step 1: Open a Mollie account

Register at mollie.com . Mollie requires identity verification and a KvK registration. The account is free.
The person registering must be authorized to act on behalf of the organization. For a stichting, this means a board member, not a volunteer or employee without signing authority.

Step 2: Connect Mollie to Moneybird

In Moneybird, go to Settings → Connections and connect the Mollie account. Moneybird then imports incoming payments automatically and creates a financial record for each one. (See Moneybird helpcenter: Koppeling met Mollie for the step-by-step setup.)

Step 3: Add the donation form to the website

  • On WordPress: Install the "Doneren met Mollie" plugin (free, available in the WordPress plugin directory ). The plugin adds a donation form that handles both one-time and recurring donations, including the SEPA mandate flow.
  • On other platforms (Squarespace, Webflow, custom HTML, etc.): Use Mollie's hosted checkout page or a payment link. The donor clicks the donate button, lands on a Mollie-hosted page to complete the payment, and returns to the website afterward. No plugin needed.

Step 4: Map donations to the correct ledger account in Moneybird

The first time Moneybird receives a donation via Mollie, set the correct ledger account for this income type (for example: "Donaties" or "Giften"). Moneybird applies the same category to future transactions from the same source. This is a one-time manual step.

What's not fully automated

  • Donor gift receipts (kwijtscheldingsverklaringen): Moneybird logs each donation as a financial record, but does not generate or send a receipt to the donor. For ANBI organizations, donors may request a kwijtscheldingsverklaring for gifts above €500 to claim tax deductions. Sending these is a manual step. When donation volume makes this time-consuming, consider an automated email trigger in Mailerlite connected via Zapier or Make.
  • Ledger account categorization: As described in Step 4: the first incoming donation requires a manual categorization in Moneybird. Once set, Moneybird remembers the mapping. This is a one-time cost.
